In the 1500`s, as a result of food shortages and an increased demand for oil, farmers from the province of Barletta, Andria and Trani, reduced much of the vine cultivation on the hillsides of Castel Del Monte and substituted it with olive grove plantations.

“Green Gold” is the name given to the oil obtained exclusively from the ‘Coratina’ olive which grows on the slopes of Castel Del Monte, in the Barletta, Andria and Trani.province.

The ‘Coratina’ variety is fruity and intense with a pungent note; it is rich in polyphenols and has a low acidic level, under 0,35% compared to the average olive oil in commerce. The chemical composition of this mono-variety of olive guarantees its characteristic notes.

Hippocrates said, “Let food be your medicine and your medicine be food” and Greek physician and ‘father’ of medicine’, Galeno, was one of many ancestors who confirmed the therapeutic properties of olive oil. Today modern science also recognizes the indisputable value of olive oil as a ‘medicinal food’ with proven health benefits due to the properties of oleic acid.

Every year, the municipalities from the BAT province, hold a variety of events to promote and publicize the importance of the local treasure, “Green Gold” olive oil. If you would like to attend any of these events whilst staying at Bed and Breakfast Acasamia in Barletta, or would like to be informed about these events, please contact Francesco Damico (tel:3202982429) for further information.
