The Margherita di Savoia saltpan faces the Adriatic and the Gargano Gulf and is only a few kilometers from B&B Barletta Acasamia. The largest saltpan in Europe and a protected natural reserve, it was known as early as the 3rd century A.D. The salt extraction industry began to develop at the end of the 16th century and during the 17th century, the ruling Bourbons declared it to be, “The most precious jewel in our crown”. In the 18th century the saltpan underwent further expansion and in 1879, was renamed after the queen consort, Margherita di Savoia, wife of Umberto I.

The museum at the saltpan houses a cultural centre and is also where scientific research is carried out. Its varied programme of activities include; guided tours of the historical collection, the saltpan and wetlands, educational workshops, scientific events, exhibitions, concerts, etc.
